Successfully held, here are the 13 winners of JAFF 2023
JOGJA-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF) was held again this year with the theme Luminescence. The festival lasted for eight days from November 25 to December 2, 2023.
The theme Luminescence means luminescence which intends to further emphasize the importance of Asian cinema so that its beauty is more radiated to the whole world. Entering its 18th year, JAFF was attended by 20,444 viewers, more than last year’s 16,000 viewers. JAFF is also supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbud Ristek).
Director of Film, Music and Media, Ahmad Mahendra said that JAFF is a festival that has an important role in Indonesia. Because JAFF represents Indonesia at the international level.
This year JAFF presents 205 films from 25 Asia Pacific countries that will be screened in competition and non-competition programs. JAFF Director Ifa Isfansyah is satisfied with this year’s JAFF.
“In this 18th year, there is already a relationship between new grills and the industry, which will make it easier for next year’s market to be more structured,” said JAFF Director, Saturday (2/12).
“Later the 19th JAFF will have a parallel event between JAFF and the film market. This event will bring together new talent with professionals,” he added.
At the end of the event, the 18th JAFF announced the winners of various categories. Monism from Indonesia won the Golden Hanoman as the best film of the 18th JAFF.
Here are the names of the winners from each category at the 18th JAFF festival
Main Competition
1. Golden Hanoman
Won by Monism directed by Riar Rizaldi. The film tells a very complex story and expresses interesting cinematic ideas in contemporary cinema.
All the judges agreed to appreciate this film for its courage in expression and dynamic movement between different genres and footages.
- Silver Hanoman
Won by Oasis of Now directed by Chia Chee Sum, this film delivers a wide range of emotions from its cinematography by effectively utilizing long takes. The jury was touched that the movie could produce such restrained confidence in its directing.
- Special Jury Mention
Won by Dreaming & dYing, directed by Nelson Yeo, this playful and imaginative film charmed the jury. Through the simplicity of showing the protagonist’s personal life, the jury admired the technicality of the movie due to its perfect directing.
- Netpac Award
Judged by: June Kim, Martika Ramirez Escobar, and Ugoran Prasad
Won by Which Color. Directed by Shahrukh Khan, Chavada is about rekindling the love for movies with storytelling. The film reminds us that the world is changing without us realizing it. It all begins in Ahmedabad, where a family’s wealth is stripped away but, on the other hand, they have to come to terms with reality. At its core, the story is about unsung heroes like fathers, mothers, children and friends.
- Blencong Award
Won by Hito. This movie directed by Stephen Lopez tells a story about politics that is packaged by a coming of age sci-fi story. With a duration of 22 minutes, this film displays creative imagination and can utilize the potential of the medium of film and language to the fullest.
- Indonesia Screen Awards
Won by The Draft. The movie directed by Yusron Fuadi ii managed to play a horror comedy consistently. This film is a sincere love letter to horror cinema that is not separated from the preferred film genre in Indonesia.
- Best Directing
The movie Sara directed by Ismail Basbeth is the winner in this category. With confident and meticulous cinematic characteristics along with embracing mise-en-scene, this movie is very close to the determination and internal conflicts of each individual. From this movie, all audiences can see the life of villagers complete with structural oppression and human values that can change.
- Best Story Telling
The Draft! directed by Anindita Suryarasmi and Yusron Fuadi is the winner of the film category. In judging this category, the storytelling criteria that provide fresh and creative ideas in the narrative throughout the film are the winners.
- Best Performance
Woman From Rote Island, directed by Irma Novita Rihi, depicts the beauty of humans living on the island of Rote. depicting how women’s lives and other values are sacrificed puts a spotlight on human exploitation. The actor who plays Marta is the most important element in this movie.
- Best Editing
The Draft, directed by Ridwan A.B. and Yusron Fuadi, succeeded in making the jury feel that the film’s editing was an invisible art. The editor in this film successfully utilizes editing with very smart assignments and provisions.
- Best Cinematography
Joseph Christoforus Fofid’s Woman From Rote Island reveals a narrative that slowly displays the emotions of each character through long takes. Through the ability to arrange the right camera can make the visualization of emotions look very clear.
- Geber Award
The movie Abang Adik, directed by Jin Ong, has a unique strength from each character that is difficult to compare. To assess this film, sensitivity to the context that will be chosen as a feature film concept and the success of its realization in the form of cinema are priorities when selecting films in this category.
- Student Award
In the movie entitled The River That Never Ends directed by J.T. Triniad became the winner. Through the depiction of loneliness presented and the narrative style that is full of layers of emotions, it can provide a mesmerizing emotional dimension for the audience later. (Z-10)
